Tolerance

Lincoln Southeast DECA is planning a public relations campaign directed towards its students, staff and parents to encourage tolerance. The Freedom Writers experience will be the catalyst for uniting LSE in this campaign.

Goals of Freedom Writers Project:

The book "The Freedom Writers Diary: How a Teacher and 150 Teens Used Writing to Change Themselves and the World Around Them" or view the movie "Freedom Writers".

To build an understanding of tolerance within students by presenting testimonials of the original Freedom Writers who have overcome major obstacles and worked on acceptance of those different then them. Three levels of promotion will build awareness of what tolerance is/not, inspiring tolerance, and finally, helping others understand what it means to "take a walk in my shoes" using a variety of life situations.

  • TO HAVE A SCHOOL ASSEMBLY

To unite and inspire the entire student body and staff of Lincoln Southeast with a school wide mission of bringing Freedom Writer speakers for an all-school assembly.

To raise $6000 to bring 2-3 original Freedom Writer students to LSE for a student assembly in January or Febuary 2008.

To establish a sense of community by improving personal relationships among students by encouraging the habit of keeping journals consistent with school improving writing goals.

The Freedom Writers came to Southeast on Febuary 20th. See some pictures from that day.

Focus on Building Tolerance

We want to build an understanding of tolerance within students by presenting testimonials of the original "Freedom Writers" who have overcome major obstacles and worked on acceptance of those different than them. Three levels of promotion will build awareness of what tolerance is and isn't, inspiring tolerance, and finally, helping others understand what it means to "take a walk in my shoes" using a variety of life situations students face.Back to Top

We have already implemented the "Freedom Writers" curriculum into some of the class rooms. The project is spearheaded by English teacher Paul Smith.

The Freedom Writers Foundation works to increase tolerance in schools. Scholarships are available to students that have exceeded their expected potential.
