The Grading Policy When Dropping a Class

Occasionally students withdraw from a course before the end of the grading period and still remain enrolled at Southeast High School. When this occurs, an alternative grading policy will be used. The LPS policy for assigning grades of W (Withdrew) or F (Failure) is based on when the student withdraws from class.

Class Rank

In the past, class rank was calculated at the end of each semester. Starting in the fall of 2013, class rank is being calculated at an additional point in time in order to incorporate Summer School courses and all courses eligible for class rank, including 8th Grade Algebra and World Language courses (beginning with Class of 2015). This calculation will be done in early September and will be reflected on each student’s transcript on 2nd Semester.

Students are sometimes disappointed to learn that they do not qualify for an athletic grant or other scholarship or for admission to certain colleges because they do not rank high enough in their class.  This brings up the important question:  How is class rank determined?

The class ranking system that is used in the Lincoln Public Schools is based on a point system and not grade point average.  Students receive value points for classes that they have taken that reflect the grade, credits earned, and the difficulty of the class. The Lincoln Public Schools Board of Education approved this system for determining class rank.  Below is an explanation of the system.
